Book Review: What The Fundraising, By Mallory Erickson

Nonprofits do some of the most rewarding and impactful work on the planet. As someone who has been in fundraising roles and organizational leadership, I’ve seen too many individuals considering a career change because they are frustrated, exhausted or deflated. I’ve also engaged with more than a few nonprofit industry leaders struggling with the state of fundraising at their organization. My hope for the sector is that fundraising can be a practice filled with more optimism and possibilty than pressure, fear and dread.
If you work in the nonprofit sector, and can relate to what I’ve just shared, MalloryErickson’s book, What The Fundraising, provides a roadmap to building a healthy culture of fundraising and strong donor relationships in a joyful way– that delivers results.
She breaks down the root cause of the challenge:
· Nonprofit’s existence rooted in societal inequities
· Scarcity mindset
· Discomfort and burnout
· Stigma
She then offers practical solutions leveraging herexperience as a professional coach to fundraisers to walk through:
· How to get into theright mindset for fundraising
· Creating and alignedfundraising strategy
· Building sincere andconnected relationships
For every…
➡️ CEO, non-profit leader or board member who is frustratedwith their organization’s fundraising outcomes (or fundraising team)
➡️ team measuring success based on revenue alone and not thestrength or value of relationships
➡️ fundraiser who fears they’ll get fired if they don’t maketheir numbers
➡️ non-fundraiser who says “I could never ask people for money”
…please give this a read. I promise you’ll enjoy it and find something of value.
